Laura Jellicoe – Biography

Laura Jellicoe studied flute at the RNCM with Clare Southworth, and in Italy with Marzio Conti. Competition titles include the British Flute Society’s International Young Artist and Llangollen International Eisteddfod Instrumentalist of the Year. She was also the Runner-Up in the Radio 2, and a Wind Finalist in the BBCTV, Young Musician of the Year competitions.

After graduating from college, Laura joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic as Sub-Principal Flute, where she spent the next 9 years. She is currently Principal Flute with the English Symphony Orchestra, and regularly guests as both Principal and 2nd Flute with several orchestras including Halle, BBC Symphony, and Northern Sinfonia. She has played concertos with BBC Concert Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, English Symphony orchestra and RLPO. She loves playing chamber music and plays with several groups including the Halle Wind Quintet, and Abbruzzi Trio (flute, cello, piano) with Bernard and Yolande Gregor-Smith.

Laura is also a keen conductor, and had the privilege of studying Conducting with Vernon Handley for 12 years. She has been Music Director of Cheshire Youth Orchestra since 2000, and has also conducted the RLPO, Manchester Camerata and the English Symphony Orchestra, with whom she conducted Vernon Handley’s memorial concert in Worcester Cathedral.

Laura is also passionate about teaching –she has been Flute Tutor at the RNCM for 12 years, and is also Flute Tutor and Chamber Music Tutor at Chetham’s, where she stood in as Head of Woodwind in 2004. Many of her students are now colleagues in the profession. She has tutored the flute section of the National Youth Orchestra, and has been adjudicator for many competitions, including BBC Young Musician of the Year and the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

 

John Wilson –  Biography

John Wilson was educated at the Northern School of Music, England. From the early 50s he achieved an amazing 50 years of unbroken service to the NSM and the Royal Northern College of Music until his retirement in 2004.  He was made a Fellow of the college in 1988.

He has worked with Britain’s leading orchestras, the National Youth Orchestra and the European Community Youth Orchestra. He was one of the original official Accompanists for the BBC Young Musician TV Competition.

During his career he has worked with a host of international artists and taken part in numerous radio and TV broadcasts, including master classes with Paul Tortelier, Sir Michael Tippett and Yehudi Menuhin.

Since retirement he enjoys a busy concert schedule. He has recently been an Official Accompanist to the Ministry of Defence and has now added Music for Cruising to his repertoire!
