Tuesday 26 July

13.15

Paul Towndrow & Steve Hamilton Duo

Two of Scotland’s finest instrumentalists. Paul – founder member of Brass Jaw, member of SNJO and “a turbo-charged amalgam of all your saxophone heroes!” (The Guardian) – teams up with Steve – pianist for Van Morrison and Billy Cobham. Demonstrating the art of the duo with lyrical pieces and dazzling, flighty lines, they exude relaxed company, producing music of great beauty, lush harmony and limitless melody.

Wednesday 27 July

13.15

Emilia Mårtensson & Barry Green

mjf international

Drawing on the wistful folk songs of Emilia’s homeland alongside some of the greatest songs of the C20th.  Swedish traditional, an original based on Schumann’s “Ich Grolle Nicht”, a Nat King Cole standard – this duo’s wide-ranging repertoire is an unexpected blend of their varied fascinations.  Instant rapport, pared-down simplicity, intimacy and poise.

Thursday 28 July

13.15

Atom String Quartet

mjf international

This Polish chamber group are a must-see: with all players in the quartet stood up, their vigorous instrumental command and wide-ranging material is breathtaking, transporting the string quartet out of the Georgian drawing room and slap bang into the C21st. Barnstorming hoe-downs, contemporary classical fragments and serious hard bop, showing us – if proof were needed – that strings swing.

Friday 29 July

13.15

Stuart McCallum & Amika

The soundworld of the string quartet lends a subtle bed of harmonies to Stuart’s stripped-back guitar arrangements; his pieces are characterised by a mellow dreamlike atmosphere, coloured by live-sampled echoing patterns and leaping improvised melodies.

Choir Sponsored Run: Members of our choir (including our Director of Music and our curate!) recently undertook a sponsored 5K.  The run was in aid of two causes: firstly, Mustard Tree, which works to support homeless people in Manchester, and secondly, the organ in St. Ann’s is in need of cleaning and tuning – which, although expensive, is vital to support the musical life of the church. Please follow this link and donate to ‪#‎TeamSparklemotion2k16‬ at the Virgin Money Giving website.

Here are some photographs of the runners (and supporters!):
